Early Stage Program Structure
Accelerating Innovation and Impact to Solve Massive Challenges
At MassChallenge, we are committed to empowering early-stage startups to transform industries, solve global challenges, and scale their impact. Our Early Stage Programs are designed to support startups working in at least one of five key sectors: Healthcare, Finance, Climate, Sustainable Food, and Security. Each program is tailored to provide startups with industry-specific resources, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration, helping founders take their companies to the next level.
MassChallenge defines “early stage” startups as those in the pre-seed to Series A stages, and those pre-revenue (but showing signs of traction) or up to $10 million in lifetime revenue. Startups may fit into one of the following categories:
We assess demand using tangible indicators like revenue, pre-orders, form fills, web traffic, active users, letters of intent (LOIs), or proofs of concept (POCs). These indicators demonstrate early market interest and position startups for successful growth and scalability.
Startups beyond $10M in lifetime revenue should consider our Challenge Programs that offer engagements with potential corporate partners.
The US-based Early Stage Programs are available as four targeted accelerators in Healthcare, Finance, Climate, and Security. Additionally, a Sustainable Food accelerator runs from our Switzerland office. Our approach provides customized resources for startups in each industry, ensuring that founders receive the support they need to thrive.
US Programs follow an 'Early Action' applications format. Founders are encouraged to apply early.
Our Early Stage Programs are built on the foundation of expert mentorship. Startups will be paired with mentors based on their selected areas of expertise, allowing for personalized guidance and feedback in critical areas of their business.
Mentor Engagement and Strategic Development:
Tailored Matching: Mentors and founders will each select up to three focus areas (e.g., User Research, Marketing, GTM Strategy) to guide the matching process, ensuring targeted and relevant support.
Hands-On Document Review: Founders will submit drafts of key documents (e.g., marketing plans, financial models) to mentors for review. Mentors provide feedback and sign off on final versions, helping refine strategies and execution.
Consistent Engagement: Founders are required to work with a minimum of five mentors throughout the program and demonstrate measurable progress.
Mock Board Meetings & Investor Pitches: To further develop their strategies, startups will participate in mock board meetings and pitch sessions. These structured engagements allow founders to present their progress, receive critical feedback, and hone their communication with investors and potential board members.
Founder Wellness and Growth:
Human > Founder Services: Founders gain access to Groundwater Institute’s racial equity and leadership programs and Reboot.io’s coaching on emotional resilience and effective leadership in high-pressure environments.
Industry-Specific Experts-in-Residence (XIRs): Founders regularly engage with in-house experts in healthcare, climate, financial access, and security & resiliency, gaining tailored insights to address challenges and opportunities in their fields.
Optional Leadership Retreat: Startups have the option to participate in a week-long leadership and wellness retreat focused on personal growth, resilience, and peer connection, helping founders balance their entrepreneurial demands.
Additional Program Features
Exclusive Perks: Startups receive special pricing and discounts from top partners such as HubSpot, AWS, Carta, and Google, providing essential tools and services to scale their businesses.
Dedicated Staff Support: MassChallenge staff are assigned to each startup to facilitate mentor sessions, track progress, and connect founders with potential investors and clients.
Comprehensive Access: Startups benefit from a robust digital library, live event recordings, and a mentor/startup directory via our digital tools. In-person events complement virtual support, fostering collaboration and connection.
